Amazon Now Requires Prepaid Returns for High-Value Items
Amazon has announced a new return policy for U.S. sellers.
Starting February 8, 2026, sellers must provide prepaid return shipping labels for all customer returns, even for high-value products. The old rule that allowed different handling for expensive items will no longer apply.
What Is Changing
All seller-fulfilled returns must now include a prepaid return label created through Amazon. This rule applies no matter how much the product costs.
Amazon wants all returns to follow the same process to make returns easier for customers.
Why Amazon Is Making This Change
Amazon says this update will:
- Make returns simpler for buyers
- Help refunds process faster
- Reduce delays and return-related messages
Customers should receive refunds more quickly once items are returned.
Are There Any Exceptions?
Yes. Some items are still excluded, such as:
- Very large or heavy items
- Dangerous goods
- Non-physical products
- Items that cannot use prepaid labels
For these products, Amazon’s existing return rules will still apply.
What Sellers Need to Know
This update may increase return costs, especially for high-value items. If a return causes a loss and the seller believes it is not their fault, Amazon recommends filing a claim through the SAFE-T process.
What Sellers Should Do Now
Sellers should review their return settings and costs before the policy takes effect to avoid issues later.
