Walmart Bans “Sell By” Date Labels on Most Food Products
Walmart has introduced a new date-labeling requirement for consumer food products to comply with California Assembly Bill No. 660.
What’s Changing?
Walmart will no longer allow “Sell By” date labels on food products, packaging, cases, or other consumer-facing materials manufactured on or after July 1, 2026.
The requirement applies to most food products that use date labeling, with certain exemptions, including:
- Infant formula
- Eggs
- Beer
- Other malt beverages
What Sellers Need to Do
Sellers should review affected products and update their packaging and labeling to replace “Sell By” with compliant terms such as:
- Best if Used By
- Use By
Make sure all applicable products manufactured on or after July 1, 2026, meet the updated requirements to avoid compliance issues.
